Salinger Goes to Court

publishing news Add comments

Reclusive author J.D. Salinger has taken a Swedish author to court. The author’s novel “60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye” is called a sequel of Salinger’s most famous novel “The Catcher in the Rye”. Arguments in the trial focused on whether or not Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of “Catcher” is subject to his own copyright, and whether or not “60 Years Later” is too closely related to “Catcher” to be published in the United States where “Catcher” is still under copyright. U.S. District Judge Deborah Batts will rule whether or not the new work is far enough removed from Salinger’s original work to be published under fair use laws. The author of “60 Years” declares his work a critical interpretation of Salinger’s work. Salinger’s team believes that “60 Years” is much too similar to “Catcher” to be considered its own work. A ruling on the issue is expected within ten days.
