New Obama Book Deal

Crown signed President Bush to a book deal on Wednesday. They also signed the current President to a two-book deal. The deal was signed just before Obama became president actually. It includes an abridged youth-oriented version of Dreams From My Father and a book about his presidency after he leaves office.

No price was put on the future book. And for the YA titleObama will receive a $500,000 advance plus 15% of the U.S. sales price for hardcover book sales and up to 10% for the domestic price for paperback sales.

It was also revealed that Obama made $2.5 million in book loyalties in 2008.

Harlequin Targeting Teens

Harlequin is setting their sites on a new audience. It’s the young adult market.

Harlequin Teen is a new  fiction line that debuts in August. The first title will be  Rachel Vincent’s My Soul to Take. It is  the first installment of the Soul Screamers series. Another paranormal tale, Intertwined by Gena Showalter, is rolling off press in September.

The imprint plans on publishing in many genres including fantasy, contemporary, historical, science fiction and, of course, romance.

Books-a-million net income declines

Books-A-Million has announced that they finished 2008 with a 34.5% decline in net income in the year. This was  on a 4.1% decline in sales. Revenue fell to just $513.3 million. And net income dropped to $10.8 million. Earnings were hurt by a $900,000 one-time charge to writedown the vale of certain store locations and goodwill.
