Each year the last week of September is designated as “Banned Books Week” by the American Library Association (ALA). It actually started a couple of days ago. This year it runs from September 27–October 4, 2008. Celebrating the Freedom to Read is the theme this year. Check out the list of Banned Books Week events on the official site. Also be sure to have a look at the list of the most Frequently challenged books.

Wall Stories: Children’s Wallpaper and Books

If you like to go see exhibits that have to do with books then there is something coming up that might be of interest to you. The location is the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City. The exhibit is called Wall Stories: Children’s Wallpaper and Books. It opens up on Friday, October 3, 2008. And it runs through through April 5, 2009. The exhibit focuses on the relationship between children’s literature, popular culture and wallpaper since the 1870s. Look for papers inspired by Peter Rabbit and Alice in Wonderland among others. There will also be info on the development of children’s books “from instructional to fictional” and the evolution of various interactive elements in books.

2008 Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize announced

The winner of the 2008 Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize has been announced. The winner was author Patrick Ness. He won for his book The Knife of Never Letting Go. This is a teen novel. It is set in a city where people can hear each other’s thoughts. It was published in the US by Candlewick this month.

The shortlisted titles were:

  • Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd
  • Before I Die by Jenny Downham
  • Cosmic by Frank Cotrell Boyce

US Paperback Release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Announced

Have you been waiting to get your hands on a paperback copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? As you may know, the UK paperback was released in July. And the release date of the US paperback was just announced. July 7, 2009 is the date that you will be able to get Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in paperback here in the US. This puts it right before the July 17th release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in theaters.
