Some interesting news happened yesterday.

Thomas Nelson announced that they were pulling out of BEA. They also announced that they were pulling out of the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS). It looks like they might be abandoning trade shows all together. If so, this is not a good thing for the Christian Book Publishing industry.

Wow, I had no idea that PlanetOut owned Alyson Books! Well, apparently they do. And they are planning on selling them.

PlanetOut Inc. is the media and entertainment company that focuses on the gay and lesbian market.

Today they announced they will sell their magazine and book publishing businesses—which include Alyson Books—to here! Networks for $6 million.

The agreement is expected to be finalized by April 30, 2008. And the transaction should close by the end of summer.

Remember when we told you that ABFFE announced its intent to fight a new Indiana law calling for booksellers to register “sexually explicit” materials with the state? Well, after that they teamed with Media Coalition in preparing to file a court challenge to the law.

Now, Media Coalition has not filed the challenge yet. But ABFFE president Chris Finan said that something will likely happen in May. You see, the law goes into effect in July, 2008.

Joining the plaintiffs, along with ABFFE, are the ACLU of Indiana and Indiana booksellers. Here’s hoping they win this one!
