According to Publishers Weekly, foreign language audiobooks are the new rage.

In fact, U.K. audiobook publisher Rickshaw Productions Limited recently expanded its offerings with the launch of The Listening Zone. The Listening Zone is where consumers can download almost 600 books in foreign language translations. Languages include Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Remember that Audible.com offers more than 400 foreign language titles, but in Spanish only.

Audiophiles can download Ira Levin’s The Stepford Wives in Dutch; Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 in French; a Spanish short story collection featuring Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle in Spanish; Machiavelli’s The Prince in Italian; or an Edgar Allan Poe collection of horror tales in German.

Wikipedia replacing need for libraries?

You no longer need to go to the library to get a listing of vocational schools. In fact, you now just need to check out Wikipedia to get a listing. Wikipedia has almost 100 vocational schools listed on their site. Some of the schools that you will find include Nouveau Riche, Durham Technical Community College, The Illinois institute of Art, and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. so before heading to the library or book store for this info check out Wikipedia first!

Oprah made her new book selection

Did you hear the news? Oprah announced her new book selection!

Yesterday morning Oprah announced her new book club selection to the world. She described it as “breaking new ground” with her “boldest choice yet.” The book in question is A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. She also said she was “over the moon excited” about the book.

She also described it as an extension of her life’s mission, “to lead people to their higher selves.” And she announced that the book would be the subject of her “first worldwide interactive class,” a free ten-week course she will co-teach with Tolle on Oprah.com live Mondays at 9 p.m. EST beginning March 3, 2008.

New Powell’s subscription club

According to Publisher’s Weekly, Powell’s Books is going to start a new subscription service under the IndieSpensable banner.

The new program is set to feature a package that will include a signed first edition of a new title plus other materials. Those items could be anything from a DVD, a magazine or sample chapters from a work-in-progress. All in all, you can expect the entire package to be sold for $39.95.

IndieSpensable will kickoff in March with Lydia Millet’s How the Dead Dream, published by Counterpoint Press, which is doing a custom cover of the title.

Powell’s is limiting the number of copies in the program to 200, with about 25 of those going to bloggers and other media members to help promote the book and service, Weich said. Packages will be sent every six weeks and subscribers can opt out of at anytime.

Powell’s will consider both fiction and nonfiction titles for the program and is looking to focus on titles from independent houses.
